| JUXTAPOWER, South Africa's Song and Dance, Inc. is a project that was founded by Sduduzo Ka-Mbili in New York City in 1999, as a means of showcasing the rich and diverse culture of South Africa's dance and song. Sduduzo's main vision for this project is to entertain and educate audiences about the wealth of talent and culture that Africa has to offer. Sduduzo is a native of rural South Africa, and has studied dance with both the Soweto Dance Theater and at the Alvin Ailey Dance Center, where he received a full scholarship. He was named one of Dance Magazine's "25 to Watch." After years of South Africa's absence from the world stage, Juxtapower is an important initiative, a long overdue theatrical expression of cultural significance. Juxtapower has performed in Washington DC, the United Nations, at a state event honoring Justice Goldstone of South Africa, the Miss World Pageant in the British Virgin Islands, and at the Apollo Theater as part of their Aids project for Africa. The company had its first full production of Uhambo (The Journey) showcase at the Little Theater in Harlem. They have also performed at the prestigious Kaye Playhouse in New York City. |
